The Assistant Vice President, Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility is responsible for leading and executing proactive and reactive media relations in support of AT&T’s corporate responsibility, sustainability, and community impact initiatives. This AVP will serve as a key member of the AT&T global media relations team working collaboratively with the Business Unit, Marketing, Legal, Investor Relations and other subject matter experts to develop strategic plans that drive results. This position typically reports to Senior Management.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the overarching media strategy and day-to-day execution of AT&T’s corporate citizenship narrative, messaging, and media relations, which includes engagement with reporters, executive visibility and thought leadership, in-depth research on issues potentially affecting the company, and coordination with internal business partners and public relations agencies.
  • Build media relationships with top-tier national news outlets and identify proactive opportunities to earn favorable press coverage, particularly those that advance the AT&T’s business, community, and philanthropic priorities.
  • Support executive leadership on external communications efforts including interview prep and facilitation.
  • Act as a trusted communications advisor helping to shape strategic messaging that reinforces AT&T’s mission of closing the digital divide and becoming more sustainable and resilient.
  • Responsible for reviewing all company-related daily media coverage to ensure editorial is factually accurate, otherwise quickly challenging reporters to pursue a correction or clarification.
  • Ability to assess the impact of a proactive campaign by analyzing the reach and sentiment of all coverage generated.
  • Maintain a keen understanding of the company’s business and external affairs priorities and have a passion for and experience in employee engagement campaigns.
  • Requires strong leadership skills to manage and direct team to successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrate superior organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, while managing a team.
  • This person has strong interpersonal skills and collaborates well with cross-functional teams and puts the team in front of the individual.

Qualification Requirements:

  • 10+ years of public relations/communications experience either in a corporate and/or agency setting. A healthy combination of both is preferred.
  • Requires expert knowledge of media personnel and outlets, advising internal clients on editorial slants and reporting style, and overseeing the development of media briefings or backgrounder discussions.
  • Holds existing relationships with top tier national business and corporate social responsibility press and strong track record of developing and implementing proactive external communications strategies to drive business results.
  • Ability to work with senior executives providing counsel on media opportunities, messaging, and overall external communications.
  • Background working for a communication, media and/or technology company desired.
  • Previous experience in Journalism a plus.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to be on call for press inquiries, which may require being available outside of normal working hours when needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree (preferred) in Communications, Journalism or Marketing.

Our AVP Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility earns between $206,900-$310,300. Not to mention all the other amazing rewards that working at AT&T offers. Individual starting salary within this range may depend on geography, experience, expertise, and education/training.
